The fear is not over personal safety but rather of disturbing what is going on. It is difficult to describe but sometimes a scene is so intensely personal and the moment so real that I am terrified that my shutter click will escape the blimp and disturb that connection the actors are sharing. It is agonizing for me, the truth be told. Others in my small brotherhood seem to shrug it off but I struggle. Despite all this inner battle, I often do shoot it or sometimes I decide that the better course of action is to watch, decide when the unfolding scene is strongest and then ask permission of the actors, director and D.O.P for a take of my own. In this scene from The Kennedys, I chose the latter. It was a very tiny studio set, which emphasized the claustrophobic surroundings that the characters were living in during the performance. No doubt this helped as a number of them were method actors. It was very challenging for stills however, as with two camera crews and a sound department, I struggled to maintain the invisible presence I normally strive for. In one scene she poses as a model for Macy's, a move that outrages her father. I had to photograph that model shoot and realizing that she was a method actor, I asked "Little Edie" what was the particular pose that so angered her father. The Kennedys offered this opportunity daily. Working closely with Barry Pepper, the brilliant actor portraying Bobby Kennedy, was both demanding and creatively rewarding. A consummate professional, he was never content to accept 95%. So when it came to recreating original material with his likeness, including a portrait by Karsh, my lighting and the pose had to be exact. The lighting proved very interesting to mimic as Karsh used tungsten hot lights and I use strobes, both of which exhibit very different qualities. I was pleased to nail it. The film stars Rebecca Romijn and she plays a photographer in the film. The brilliant production designer, Arv Grewal and I proposed to Director Nick Hamm that the images used as her work would be mine and many images, like this one came directly from my portfolio. A number though were shot with the young boy in the film, Cameron Bright and those as much as possible would make use of reflections. I suggested that the reflection of Cameron in shiny surfaces would emphasize the notion of cloning, the sinister subject of the film. A lot of my personal work explores the idea of the Goddess and the Land. This seemed like an appropriate theme for my letter and in my proposal, I chose the letter "I." Sadly my design was not deemed worthy, possibly due to the nudity but for myself, the image came out as I envisioned it, with multiple images of the goddess and green dancing and evolving in spiritual celebration. The photograph was not the reproducible paper print that we have come to know but a unique one off silver plate. In 1839, the insensitivity to light of the photographic medium meant that a portrait might take as long as twenty minutes, with the subject sitting absolutely still, possibly held in place with head and arm clamps. Imagine the relationship that would develop between sitter and photographer. You would be locked in the moment not for 1/60th of a second but twenty minutes. It would have to impact on the results beyond the physical to the psychological. Jump ahead to January 2004, when two robots named Opportunity and Spirit landed on Mars and began sending back images of our sister planet. How to send back such dazzling, sharp images from so far away? When a “prosumer” digital single lens reflex camera captures 12 megabyte files with ease, was it possible to send so much information such a great distance on a radio signal? No, but the solution lay in taking many photographs of tiny low resolution files, mere kilobytes, that could be sent back to Earth and stitched together to create a file of great detail. The technology used on the Mars rover is available to consumers today in the form of a robotic device that accepts a camera and executes a series of moves, firing the camera in a programmed sequence. The images may then be stitched together to make one very sharp image. It is important to understand that rather than one wide angle or panoramic single image, the photographer is creating a collection of many normal or telephoto images that then join to make a massive composite image of the same subject area. The device is called a Gigapan. Traditionally, Gigapan images are used for landscape photography, although some sporting events have also been covered by a Gigapan. Arguably the most famous Gigapan exposure is the inauguration of Barack Obama. An image covering a two mile wide section may be zoomed in so that only the President’s head is in the frame and the image is sharp. It truly is astounding. I had been looking for new avenues of self expression. As a middle aged male and a parent of teenage daughters, I have been seeking answers to age old questions. Looking to my sixteen year old, Sunny got me thinking about how complex a person she really was. Searching for her own answers, she is daily confronted by issues of self esteem, peer pressure, the tyranny of social media, the stress of looking for a job, growing pains and body image, grades and concerns about university or college placement, the environment and the world being left in her care. Is it any wonder that so many young people today suffer from such issues as depression and anxiety disorder? I decided to explore the portrait in a somewhat Hockney like way using the Gigapan to make a portrait. Although never intended for the purpose, it seemed to me the perfect solution. The result is 252 Unique Images of Sunny. Taking over fifteen minutes to shoot, each image was stitched together with software to create a single final image. Interestingly, in the same way that not all the emulsion would stick to the silver surface on a Daguerreotype, leaving blank areas, so too with the assembled portrait do we end up with incomplete sections. Note that looking closely, it is possible to find multiple images and blurred sections, hinting at the many characteristics of the her personality, that I have yet to be given permission to know about or come to understand. The eyes are sharp however as was deemed essential to the project. Astounding is the fine grain definition one perceives when one considers that each image was shot at ISO 6400. The final assembled file is one point two gigabytes, a massive amount of information that would normally result in a six foot wide print. Ernie's granddaughter was not warming up to me during the shoot and I was clearly going down in flames. Recognizing this, Ernie whispered something in her ear at which point she gave me the most beautiful smiles and within a few rolls, we had the image. Much relieved, I thanked them all and quietly taking Ernie aside, I asked him what he said to help me out. Magazine's "A Day In The Life of T.O." I found myself hanging over the edge of the biggest doughnut section of the C.N. Tower, photographing the man who looks after what was then the world's tallest building, inside and out. Using a fisheye lens to show from the top to the ground, I was held in place by my story editor grabbing firmly on to my belt. When finished, our man Ken ( I think ) suggested we shoot the inside too. "You mean it is hollow?" we asked in surprise. Sure he said and here is the proof for all of you to see. I found hanging in a basket taking this shot much more frightening than when I was outside. Being a manly man and Canadian, when leaving I asked if I could spit. Karen was massively supportive of my work and allowed me to really push the envelope of what a conservative client would accept. In this case, I would go into the studio, always after midnight and start running Tri-X 120 film through the 'Blad. I would tape the focus down on minimum and move back and forth until it felt right. I would keep shooting and eventually feel the Muse come in; the images would be great for a few frames and then she would leave again. Sometimes, as in the image at the right, only the smallest thing would be sharp, in this case the foil covering the cork. Eventually I had to pull back a bit, which is why the later image on the left is more clear as to subject. I like things that danced or looked alive despite being non human. To help with that required like minded individuals, in this case the brilliant designer Scott Purdy of Gravity Design and the off figure stylist Kay Fujiwara. Kay was a very merry soul who often styled clothing with a chop stick and and loved when I played Louis Armstrong. When I worked with Kay, she was well into her seventies but that was irrelevant. Although I am not a catalog shooter, the opportunity to shoot the Christmas Toy Book came and I jumped on it. It was so much fun! I had to rent a storage unit to hold all the toys as my studio couldn't hold them all and I shared photography with my best friend and studio partner Geoffrey Ross. When not shooting, we were helping my assistant Cara assemble toys, arguably one of the most challenging aspects of the job. I photographed kids playing with the toys and we did our fair share of that to, which helped put context into how we would prop the toys and set them up. In this, the cover image, we wanted to show the Barbi house under the tree in the kind of magical glow that one would see as a young child happening upon it in the wee hours.
